Jean McGann Retires

“You don’t know what I can do”

Jean McGann retires

With the end of the year came the end of a 28-year later-in life career for a Society staffer. Jean McGann has retired. She first came here on her way to Florida. She answered an ad in the newspaper for a position as a staff member at the Historical Society and got the job, originally working three days a week. That was back in 1997. Recently, because of her age (mid-eighties), she pared her hours back to one day per week.

Recalling her interview with then Society President Joe Rowe, who expressed concern over her lack of experience in local history, she replied “Don’t count me out. You don’t know what I can do.”

We sure didn’t. But past and current Society presidents and Board members learned quickly that Jean was the go-to person if one had a question about the Society and its collections. And if she didn’t know the answer to a question, she’d find out for you. Her knowledge, cheerful manner, and sense of humor will be sorely missed.

Thank you, Jean, for 28 years of excellent service.
